Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 John 1:2
The desire for good health is a concern for many if not all of us. Some of us struggle with our weight, some with smoking or substance abuse, some with diverse illnesses and some of us struggle with the idea of ageing. No matter what your health struggle is, this verse highlights an important connection between your soul (thoughts, feelings, will) and your health.
What you think about has a vital role in what happens to your body. From a simple standpoint, you know what happens when you think of something you find very funny – it forces you to smile. Similarly, a sad or painful thought can illicit a tear, an anxious thought makes you jittery and so on. This suggests that the mind-body connection is effective and you can use your thoughts, feelings and will to positively affect your physical body.
“Stand up and go. Your faith has made you whole.”
Luke 17:19
You must first decide what “wholeness” means for you, it is different for each one of us. For some, it might be healing from an illness, overcoming substance abuse or addiction, accepting your body, or finding inner peace. Whatever being whole may mean for you, it is reassuring to know that you have been empowered to affect the outcome.
So for example, if you are dealing with a weight issue, begin to imagine yourself, not as you are, but as you desire to be. Accept responsibility for who you are and accept responsibility that you are capable of making the desired change. This exercise may initially seem overwhelming, but persist in imagining that you are now the weight you desire, and your faith will create the possibilities for you to stand up and go in your wholeness.
