Heritage from the Lord

Children are a heritage from the Lord

Psalm 127:3

Imagine getting a call out of the blue informing you that a long lost relative somewhere has sadly passed away and you are the benefitiary of a great wealth they have left behind. After verifying this claim and it turning out to be true, can you imagine the joy and happiness you would feel? You would be absolutely ecstatic, essentially you have become wealthy instantly. You would probably start planning out in your head, all the things you would spend your new found wealth on. You probably wouldn’t get to sleep much for the first couple of nights after the inheritance has been transferred to you.

The scenario you have imagined parallels what happens when a child is born. The verse says that children are an inheritance from God. When children are born, there is usually fanfare, a great deal of joy and happiness, people instantly become new parents the moment the baby arrives. There is usually not much sleep at least for the first couple of nights and there is a period of adjustment to the new addition.

However, once the inheritance taxes have been paid and the novelty wears off, you soon realise that the responsible thing to do is to invest the inheritance so that it may continue to grow. So likewise, the expectation is that we are to invest in our children so that they may grow in the right way.

Train up a child in the way he should go, And even when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 22:6

This principle encourages you to invest your time, knowledge, skills and resources in your children. Train them to be of even higher value by helping them to develop good character and their talents.
