Action your goals

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

James 2:18

The third step on the ladder is to action your goals.

Breaking your goals into actionable items

You can have the best ideas and have the best laid out plans, but if you don’t do anything to execute your goal, it will just remain a dream. According to author and motivational speaker Les Brown, “the graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.” After thinking through your goal and planning for it, you now need to do something about it. Having to execute the entirety of your goal may seem quite overwhelming at the beginning, but breaking it down into smaller manageable items will help you see that the goal is attainable.

Actionable items into steps

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”

Lao Tzu

Now, break those items into simple steps you can execute and then like Nike, “just do it!” Begin your journey by actioning your first single step.

Time-bound your goals

What do you need to do and by when? Putting time boxes around your goals will ensure that you do not drift and that you can realize the benefits you want by the time you intended.

Commit work/time

Lots of different things will be competing for your time and effort; family, career, friends and so on. You need to be deliberate in allocating time and energy to work on your goal. Ensure that you prioritize your goal, otherwise it will soon find its place in the graveyard of goals and dreams.

Recognize your achievements

Don’t wait until you have realized the entirety of your goal before celebrating. Recognize your achievements when you have hit a milestone. Renew your enthusiasm and commitment, and continue forging ahead.

Communicate

As discussed in the Plan your goals post, remember to constantly engage your channels of communication with those who have a stake in the achievement of your goal.

That is it for executing, next we move on to controlling your goal…..
