The LORD answered, “What’s that in your hand?” “A walking stick,” Moses replied. “Throw it down!” the LORD commanded.
Exodus 4:2-3
Sometimes, we can get distracted and loose focus. We loose focus of our vision, goals, dreams and aspirations. We can loose focus in marriage, concerning our children, in our career, concerning our finances, concerning our health and wellbeing, concerning our family and relationships. We can loose focus and forget to appreciate and be grateful for the things we have and the intrinsic value they add to our lives.
Like Moses, we begin to make excuses and focus on the things we do not have: “If only I had more time”, “If only my husband or wife was more understanding”, “If only I had more clients”, “If only my boss was nicer to me”, “If, if, if”. In Moses’ case, his excuse was his inability to be eloquent: “If only I didn’t stammer!”. But God was far less interested in who Moses wasn’t or what he did not have. So, in order to re-focus Moses’ attention, God asked him, “What’s that in your hand?”
Focusing on who you are and what you have is key to maximizing your own potential and opportunities. Knowing that with God, who you are and what you have, can and will grow. After Moses was able to bring his attention to what he had in his hand (a walking stick), God asked him to lay it down – for God cannot use what we haven’t surrendered to him – we must learn to let go!
Whatever you have in your hand may not seem like much to you. Maybe you don’t have much time or money, perhaps you think you are not smart or educated enough. Maybe your family is not as priviledged or well connected, perhaps you’re too tall or not tall enough, maybe you feel you’re too old or not old enough, perhaps all you have in your hand is equivalent to just a stick like Moses or a small round stone like David. It really doesn’t matter what you showed up with, once you surrender it to God, it becomes enough, and it will be all you need to be impactful and live an accomplished life – we must learn to let God!
All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage].
2 Timothy 3:16
Surrendering to God means to trust and obey. Trusting God to make what you have in your hand become abundantly sufficient, helping you to navigate the winding road of life and giving you the guidance to get where you need to go. Obeying God involves reading, meditating and practising bible based principles – for they are God inspired. As you learn to let go and let God, you will begin to see successful outcomes in your life, both publicly and privately, and to experience yourself accomplishing more with whatever it is you have!
